Jailbreak is an open-world action Roblox experience with a cops-and-robbers theme. Developed by asimo3089 and badcc under the Badimo community, the experience was released on April 21, 2017.[1] The experience bears a resemblance to the Grand Theft Auto series, particularly with the ability to rob places such as banks, casinos/nightclubs, museums, etc. However, the content was adjusted to be family-friendly abide with Roblox's Terms of Use.[citation needed] As of January 2025, this experience currently has approx. 7,237,000,000 visits, 5,566,000 likes, 777,220 dislikes, and 18,319,000 favorites.
On December 23, 2017, the experience surpassed 121k concurrent players which was a record at the time, beating the former record held by Egg Hunt 2017: The Lost Eggs. It was the first experience to reach 100,000 players. It was also the second experience to reach 200,000,000 visits in less than a year, and the first to reach 2,000,000,000 visits in less than 2 years on November 8, 2018. It became the first experience to reach 2,000,000 favorites, in the summer of 2018. On August 11, 2024, the game reached 7,000,000,000 visits.
Although the experience tends to fluctuate in concurrent rankings, Jailbreak is considered one of the most popular experiences on Roblox due to the length of time that it has remained on the top 15. However, this is also influenced by Badimo's strategic planning for releasing updates. It gained strong competition in early 2019 with the release of Mad City, a very similar cops-and-robbers style experience. Jailbreak's massive success has resulted in more than 20 nominations and 13 awards won at the 5th Annual Bloxy Awards. Counting collective sales of microtransactions and gamepasses, Jailbreak has earned over 1 Billion Robux in revenue (which translates to over US$3,000,000 through DevEx).
Jailbreak takes heavy inspiration from Prison Life by Aesthetical and Redwood Prison by RoyStanford, but focuses more on gameplay outside of the prison. It is credited with causing noticeable losses to both experiences, with Prison Life and Redwood Prison both losing nearly half of their players since Jailbreak came out. This is especially unusual because both Prison Life and Redwood Prison came out long before Jailbreak. As an indirect result of this, Jailbreak has also seen significant criticism compared to Prison Life & Redwood Prison. This is largely caused by the gameplay being criticized as stagnant after being seen at or near #1 on the Popular section of the Charts page for years. At Monopoly Roblox 2022 Edition Board Game, the experience was featured.
Gameplay[]
Jailbreak follows traditional 'Cops and Robbers' gameplay, with three playable teams: police, prisoner, and criminal. The police and prisoner teams are selectable from the team selection menu. To become a criminal, one must select the prisoner team and escape prison. Police spawn either in the police stations at the prison (one inside the prison and one next to the gate at the prison) the police station near the city, or at the desert military base. Players can use C to crouch, F to punch, E to do things like pickpocket an officer and pick up items, and hold shift while walking to sprint. Police spawn with four tools:
- Pistol: Self explanatory; can damage anybody in the opposing team usually used at range.
- Handcuffs: Temporarily immobilize and send prisoners and criminals back to a prison cell and gives 400 cash to the cop and the person arrested's bounty.
- Taser: Ragdolls prisoners and criminals for a short amount of time when hit. Usually used along with the Handcuffs to easily arrest criminals.
- Road Spike: Device used to pop tires of cars, temporarily immobilizing the car.
Meanwhile, prisoners spawn in a cell or elsewhere in the prison with nothing. If obtain a keycard, the prisoner can to open all security doors unless the prisoner gets arrested (or dies). Using a keycard pickpocketed from an officer or stolen from the corpse of an officer, a prisoner can escape the prison becoming a criminal. Using a keycard is a less popular method of escaping due to the fact that it is very difficult to pickpocket an officer without being noticed and promptly arrested. Police who continuously kill or arrest innocent Prisoners will be turned into prisoners themselves and get a small amount of money deducted from their in-experience balance. Police can only arrest a prisoner if they have obtained a keycard or gun, punched another prisoner/cop or attempted to escape prison. This experience also had lots of seasons with lots of prizes.
Escape Routes[]
Escape routes are ways to escape from the prison allowing prisoners to run/drive away from the prison, making prisoners a criminal. The escape routes are:
- Power Box
- Players can punch an electrical box next to the prison gun shop repeatedly to open a door. After that, they are able to parkour through the area onto the parking lot, where prisoners can escape via crawling under a fence.
- This method is the oldest in the game, being present since day one.

- Exploding Wall
- A stick of C4 can be planted on a wall in the yard to blow it open. To obtain the C4, prisoners must find and interact with an NPC in the prison block (known as Rusty) to offer him a donut for another item of his. This item has a chance of being C4, which can then be stuck to the yard's wall to create an exit.
- This method is one of the more rarer to see used in-game, mainly due to its tedious process and unreliability.
- This method does not lead the player directly to the automatically spawning car at the front of the prison, therefore making it harder to create distance between oneself and the prison to successfully escape. It also makes a very loud and noticeable explosion sound.

- Police Control Gate
- A method which players rarely use due to it requiring the help of a police officer. Next to the helicopter, a red button can be pressed, opening the gate allowing prisoners to gain access to the parking lot and escape. This button, however is only accessible to a player with a keycard due to the fact that it is on the police station roof.
- Parking Lot Gate
- This method involves a gate at the parking lot requiring a keycard or controllable in a room. Players can either acquire a keycard and open the gate or crawl under the hole dug underneath the fence. Obtaining a keycard allows a player to immediately speed away from the prison, while crawling under the hole opens a window of opportunity to arrest the prisoner while they are still on foot trying to reach the car that spawns outside the prison.
- Sewer Escape
- There are sewer grates outside both outside the police station in the prison and the yard. A player can open this grate, run through the sewer, and open either one of the two exit grates, one leading to the prison's main entrance gates, and the other across the street, near a Camaro spawn area.
- This method has long been one of the more popular ones due to its simplicity.

- Visitors Building "Escape"
- A vent can be found in the Visitors Building that leads straight into the nearby police station. During the visitors building's opening hours from 6:30-11:00 AM and 3:00-11:15 PM, players can access this vent, obtain weapons, kill/pickpocket officers and obtain keycards to make an escape. While it isn't a proper 'escape' per se, it's still a popular method of doing so.

Although it is useful for a first-time player the car has bad handling and is widely known to be the slowest car in the entire game, behind the Truck, and therefore people may get out of hand and control in this car, especially during a police get-away.

Pickup Truck (Chevrolet C-10 Pickup)[]
Description - The design of the Pickup Truck is mainly inspired by the first gen Dodge Ram pickup with a few exceptions. This snappy pickup truck is slower than the Camaro, however the Camaro may catch up at sharp bends because the Pickup Truck would slow down a little rather than drifting, because the Pickup Truck is a heavier car then all the other cars of this game, and so it will need to control the entire body design, even the flatbed, therefore being slightly harder to control with. The flatbed is sleek and smooth, with two silver platforms on both sides.

Tesla Model 3[]

Unlike all the other vehicles the engine is quiet and has a "savage" kind of noise. A brilliant advantage for police get-away yet so cheap, and no need to buy a Lambo or Bugatti! However, it is recommended to buy the level 5 engine.

In this game, this ATV version can get out of control due to bouncing on the off-road tracks too often, but despite that, it is a fast vehicle. This car is slightly taller than the Camaro. The huge flaw of this vehicle that compared to other vehicles of this game, this dune buggy ATV does not have good acceleration, and not to mention about too much bouncing around. Tesla Cybertruck[]
Description - This pickup truck is an all-electric battery-powered light commercial vehicle. It has a polygonal body style. It is based on the 2019 Tesla Cybertruck concept vehicle. This electric pickup truck is good for those who play with many friends due to the vehicle's high seating capacity. In disadvantages, it's large size makes it an easy target for enemies trying to pop the tires. It's also terribly slow in reverse but this vehicle's size makes it great for off-roading due to its high suspension. It is slightly faster than the Camaro and Model3 but lost to the Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mclaren, Torpedo, R8, Roadster, Arachnid and Bugatti.

Sadly, the two passengers seating behind the flatbed is exposed to gunfire.

- Volcano criminal base/hideout - Secondary criminal base. Has 2 La Matador cars (Lamborghinis) and two Camaros in it by a Rolls Royce Wraith with an open roof with a mini gun in front of it (you can only drive this car if you have bough the crime boss game pass.) Weapons are on the table also with the crime boss game pass on the right of the right of the Rolls Royce Wraith there are a few guns a bandanna and a suit which you may only equip with the crime boss game pass. As of the Museum update, two collectors NPCs spawn here.
- Bank - There are currently 2 banks in Jailbreak - the Rising City Bank and the Crater City Bank. They are places where criminals can rob 5 Random Rooms like Presidential Vault, The Mint, Underwater, Deductions, and Classic Remastered. You used to need a key card, but now you can go into the alley, crawl, punch the hatch, enter the new escape route, place the dynamite, and enter the bank. Just be sure to go to the stairs to initiate the robbery! After you enter the bank, make your way through the lasers and to the back where the vault is. However, this glitch was patched on a later update. Keep your weapons out. You can collect a total of $2,000 (Remastered bank), $2,250 (Deductions), $2,000 (Underwater) and $3,750 (Presidential vault or The mint) ($3,500 with the bigger duffel bag, $3,600 with the VIP.) After you collect your money, exit the bank using either the stairs or the new, safer route introduced in the 1 billion visit update. You will not receive your money if a police officer arrests you, and the amount of money you stole will be added to your overall bounty. If police enter the bank, you will get a notification at the bottom right of our screen saying, "The police have entered the building!"
- Power Plant - A robbery near the bottom of the map. To get in, you must complete a simple puzzle that will open the power plant door. From here, you must go down a conveyor belt with lasers you must jump over. The conveyor belt will bring you underground to a small platform where you must complete a more difficult puzzle. Upon completing this puzzle, you will receive a tube of uranium that is worth $7,000. However, every half-second, the uranium loses $50 worth of its value. After receiving the uranium, you must quickly get on a conveyor belt that will bring you back to a room with multiple doors that all lead outside. However, like the first conveyor belt, this one has lasers along with piston crushers that remove half of your health if they crush you. Once outside, you must quickly drive to the volcano criminal base to deliver the uranium before it loses too much value.
- Jewelry store - A robbery in Rising City that opens alongside the Rising City Bank, and Museum. To enter, players can not enter through the front door as it is always locked no matter what. Instead, they must stand on a white X in front of the windows, which will spawn a laser cutter that slices open the window allowing for a criminal to get in. The jewelry store has 6 floors, the first 2 floors are filled with jewelry cases that the player can punch to break open and will receive $500 to their duffel bag. These floors are also filled with stationary lasers all over the floor and 2 moving lasers. The next 2 floors are filled with randomly generated obstacles and occasionally jewels that the player can grab for $500 to their duffel bag. The fifth floor is always the same, with simple lasers to jump over, a white X which breaks open the window when stood on (a possible escape from the jewelry store), and a staircase that leads up to the sixth floor, which consists of 3 doors that lead to the roof (the main way of escaping the jewelry store). Upon exiting the jewelry store, players must drive to any criminal base (the Rising City criminal base is closest and is the most popular area to go to) to deliver there duffel bag and receive their money. There are some important things to note though: Upon breaking the first jewelry case, shutters will cover the windows allowing for no one else to get in through the broken window. This will also trigger the robbery and activate the moving lasers. However, criminals can climb a ladder to the roof and enter through the roof door, allowing for another way to get in. Police can not enter through this door.
- Donut Shop - Opposite to the gas station in the village, you can get donuts here and rob employees. You get $250 if you don't own duffel bag ($300 with VIP) and $500 if you own duffel bag ($600 with VIP)
- Gun shop - The Gun shop is in the village near the Glider Store. In it, you can buy a shotgun, AK-47, Rockets, Rocket Launchers, and Grenades. The Mustang spawns outside.
- Secondary Gun Shop - To find the secondary Gun Shop, you have to follow the road along the dunes and take a right when you get to the city. In the secondary Gun Shop, you can buy the same guns as the first Gun Shop, and practice on a few targets.
- The second garage - To find the second garage you need to go to the Donut shop and keep on going down the road. You will soon see a garage. It is in close proximity to the secondary criminal base and has space for one car.
- Gas station - Opposite the Donut Shop, you can rob the employee there. The pickup truck spawns outside of it. You get $250 if you don't own duffel bag ($300 with VIP) and $500 if you own duffel bag ($600 with VIP)
- Train - The second most recently added location to the game, the train follows along the train tracks (obviously). It is able to be robbed but is harder to rob than the Bank and Jewelry store since it is a moving object that often glitches. The amount you get is $1,500 if you do not own duffel bag ($1,800 if you own VIP) and $3,000 if you own duffel bag ($3,600 for VIP)
- Museum - The first location added in Jailbreak that requires two players to rob. To get there, go to the jewelry store, take a left turn, then at the next fork take a right turn. Follow the road and you will be there! To rob, place dynamite on the roof (two players needed), once the dynamite has detonated, you will see a crack in the roof and two exposed ceiling bars. Drop onto the ceiling bars first, then drop into the Museum. There fill up your bag with artifacts. Be careful, don't trigger the alarms by touching the moving lasers on the floor. If you do, the police will be notified, the lasers will turn red, do more damage and move quicker. To escape, you will need two players in different security rooms (after solving puzzles to open the entrances, obviously) two players will need to pull the levers in there at approx. the same time. The lasers will turn white, move slower, do less damage, and the doors will be unlocked. Then race to the volcano base and ram into the collectors to receive your cash. 1 kg of artifacts is equivalent to $700, which is bumped up to $840 with the VIP game pass. In total, a Criminal can receive up to $3500 without any game passes $4,200 with the VIP game pass, $7,000 with the Duffel Bag game pass and finally, $8,400 with both the VIP and Duffel Bag tier 4 game passes.
- Hospital - cannot be entered, but has an ambulance outside. Slower than other cars, it is mostly used for quick healing. Hopping in the back of the ambulance will heal you approximately 75% faster.
- Tomb - A robbery that was added to Jailbreak in the Season 4 update the requires three players to rob it.
- Crown Jewel - Added during the 5 year anniversary live update. It consists of 4 floors. Inside the Casino is a Nightclub featuring a foyer, couches, an ATM, a few slot machines and a disco floor. The Nightclub is always accessible whether or not the Casino is open for robbery, but the player can only find the code to the door when it is open. Further down the Nightclub is a keypad-restricted door, which separates the Nightclub from the robbery portion of the Casino. When the Casino is open, players must find a 4-digit code for the keypad. The code varies and randomly appears in different areas. Input the code into the keypad door at the end of the Casino.
- Mansion - Located at the hill near the Crater Desert where the CEO boss fight takes place.
- Oil Rig - It must be used by driving a boat there. It features four rooms and is heavily guarded by bandits. Rooms 1 through 3 feature large oil tanks that the player can steal from, while the fourth room features a control room for the laser turrets. Around and inside the Oil Rig, you can find explosive barrels that can deal splash damage to NPCs as well as other players when shot. These barrels can be picked up by aerial vehicles and dropped for the same effect. It is also the only robbery to have boats as the main mechanic and vehicle used to rob it.

- Sandcastle - Does not do anything. Between the sand dunes and a hill.
- Arnold - 2 buildings right from the bank found at the town. The building is a red 2-story building, on the top-left window there should be a shadow of Arnold from the late 90's Nicktoon "Hey Arnold!".

Safes[]
These are essentially Jailbreak's form of loot boxes, but all items obtained from them are purely for cosmetic purposes to avoid a Pay-2-Win situation.
There are 6 different types of safes that give you various forms of decorations for your vehicles, which can then be applied in a Garage. You can buy them for yourself or gift them to any player you want, and most of the skins in these safes are buyable in the garage (with the exception of The Vault).
- The 1st safe is the Common safe. It costs $500 and has a chance to give an uncommon safe. It is colored gray. All players get this daily.
- The 2nd safe is the Uncommon safe. It costs $1000 and has a chance to give the rare safe. The safe is colored blue. VIP members get this daily.
- The 3rd safe is the Rare safe. It costs $2,500 and has a chance to give an ultra-rare safe. It is colored yellow.
- The 4th safe is the Ultra Rare safe. It costs $5,000 and has a chance to give a legendary crate. The safe is colored orange.
- The 5th safe is the Legendary safe. This safe grants the best car decorations, it costs a whopping $10,000. It is colored red.
- The 6th and most expensive safe is The Vault and it costs a hefty $30,000. It gives unique items for your vehicle, which cannot be purchased in the garage or unlocked from other chests. It is colored purple.
Decorations for Vehicles[]
- Texture - Decorates your vehicle with a repeated pattern. Overlaps body color.
- Body Color - Changes your vehicle's paint job to the desired color (for the Volt Bike, it only changes the color of the glowing lines of the vehicle and its trail).
- Window Color - Changes the tint of your vehicle's windows (not really a tint, it's more like a solid color akin to Body Color and Wheel Color).
- Glow (LAND VEHICLES ONLY) - Provides your vehicle with a faint colored aura of light around it (much more visible at night or in dark places).
- Wheel Color (LAND VEHICLES ONLY) (excluding Volt Bike) - Same purpose as body color, but for wheel rims instead.
- Wheels (LAND VEHICLES ONLY) (excluding Volt Bike) - Changes the rim design on your vehicle's tires.
- Wings (LAND VEHICLES ONLY) '(excluding Volt Bike)'- Adds a spoiler wing on the rear of your vehicle.
- Headlights(LAND VEHICLES ONLY) - Changes the color of your vehicle's headlight.
- Engine (LAND VEHICLES ONLY) (excluding Volt Bike) - Increases your vehicle's performance.
- Suspension (LAND VEHICLES ONLY) (excluding Volt Bike) - Raises or lowers the suspension of your vehicle depending on the option chosen.
- License Plate (LAND VEHICLES ONLY) (excluding Volt Bike) - Displays a custom text on your vehicle's license plate, located on its rim.
Ways to get a keycard/weapon[]
Getting a key card[]
- You can pickpocket a cop to get a keycard. You'll still have a chance of getting a Pistol, or most unlikely, a donut. Remember that if you do a successful pickpocket, you'll be marked for arrest, and you can be arrested, tazed, or shot.
- Kill a cop. Once the cop dies, just go to the dead cop and press E on the key card (or more likely a pistol) to pick it up. Do not let any other cops notice you! It is more likely that the cop will drop a pistol instead of a card.
- If you are playing on Windows 10, you can download Roblox from the Windows store and have a different account as a cop and you, as a prisoner, and hide him somewhere and just get free key cards every time you get arrested. You can also do this by playing on mobile by making the mobile player a cop.
- Go on the police team and then kill your in-game character by trying to jump on the electric fence and if you didn't drop a keycard then do this again and again and when you dropped a keycard switch to the prisoner team and then pick up the keycard and escape (Patched).
- If you are a cop, there is one cell in the prison that you could put guns, keycards, handcuffs, tasers in. prisoners can then inspect draw and pull out something.
Getting a weapon[]
- Escape the prison and go to one of the criminal bases, when you are there, you will see guns in there. Just click on some of the guns to receive them.
- Shoot the police and simply pick up a pistol.
- If you have a key card and you are still in prison, stop at the Police Station (if you do not have a key card, ask the police to pickpocket them) and pick up weapons. Remember cops randomly spawn at the police stations.
- You can also use a road at the right of the jewelry store. Then once you see the roof of the station, drive your car onto the roof. Then jump on your car and get to the helipad. Go down the ladder and collect your weapons.
- There are also some weapons at the Gun Shop in the town, next to the Glider Store. The Gun Store can be found by looking for a building with a glowing target symbol.
Criticism of Jailbreak[]
Most Prison Life and Redwood Prison fans criticize Jailbreak for being a rip-off of the said experiences. Other users believe that it is invalid as the experience focuses more on heists rather than its titular aspect, which is escaping from the prison. In a tweet from Aesthetical, he asks if Jailbreak could stop stealing players. Badimo has said that while they were heavily inspired from these previous breakout experiences, the main purpose for creating Jailbreak was that they wanted to expand on the criminal life which was not fleshed out in either Prison Life or Redwood.
Camping cops are criticized in Jailbreak as they prevent criminals from robbing and prisoners from escaping, however, the developers have defended this tactic by saying that they want the experience to be somewhat realistic and cops waiting outside to arrest criminals is part of that realism factor. One update has attempted to deter this by adding the extremely rare possibility of getting struck by lightning while being AFK outdoors, but it is simple to stay (or rather camp) undercover.
In 2018's 5th Annual Bloxy Awards, Jailbreak was nominated for categories that would not normally fit in, such as "Best Free-for-All Game" (it is team-based rather than a free-for-all). They also won over 10 awards, fuelling suspicions of users who believe the Bloxy's are rigged/biased towards Jailbreak.
Recently, there has been a sharp increase in players using exploits to noclip and speed hack in Jailbreak. While the main reason for this spike is still unknown, most players are highly irritated by these exploiters and are calling on Badimo to take action against them. However, the developers have stated that they are still trying to find a solution to these exploits and that not even Roblox engineers can figure out how it works yet either. The popular town-and-city experience Welcome to Bloxburg seems to have solved this by simply checking for players going inside collidable bricks and kicking them as followed, but in Jailbreak the no-clippers purposely turn off collisions with their avatar's torso knowing there might be systems in place to detect them entering closed-off buildings if they hadn't altered their collision properties.
On August 1, 2018, Jailbreak was accidentally deleted, although asimo3089 stated that Roblox was quick to bring it back up since they noticed a sudden absence of about 70,000 concurrent players. Some players were quick to celebrate this due to their immense dislike for the experience.
