Character with clothes

An avatar wearing both layered clothing and classic clothing.

Clothing is a form of avatar customization on Roblox and primarily a type of user-generated content. It includes the subgroups of layered clothing (3D clothing) and classic clothing (2D clothing). Clothing includes items that cover the body parts of an avatar; torso, arms, and legs. Various subgroups and types of clothing can be layered over each other.

History[]

The first type of clothing was T-shirts (now "classic T-shirts"). T-shirts were originally available for most of Roblox's history, though only opened to player uploading in March 2007. They were originally referred to as "shirts" until shirts and pants (now "classic shirts" and "classic pants") were announced, in which they were renamed T-shirts. On April 23, 2008, Shedletsky uploaded the official announcement for shirts & pants to his YouTube channel, titled: Shirts... And Pants. Pants Pants Pants Pants.[1] Uploading shirts and pants at this time, along with keeping them on-sale, required Builders Club (now Roblox Premium). The Roblox Premium requirement for classic clothing was announced on December 9, 2020, to be planned for removal and completely removed by March 25, 2021; in its place were fees for uploading (for classic shirts and classic pants) or placing the asset onsale (for classic T-shirts).[2] This fee was originally 50 Robux, but later lowered to 10 Robux, where it currently remains.

Layered clothing was first mentioned in the "Skinned Meshes: A Visual Showcase" blog post by Roblox, posted in November 2020.[3] Roblox launched the cage mesh deformer in April 2021, another step to the implementation of layered clothing. From June to September 2021, many pieces of layered clothing, primarily jackets, were uploaded to the marketplace, although they were off-sale. On October 20, 2021, players were given early access through a file on GitHub which once downloaded, would send them to Roblox Studio to test the items.[4][5] In January 2022, Roblox officially uploaded more layered clothes onto the avatar shop, and a few instances of the items being mistakenly put on-sale and obtainable occurred for the next few weeks. By early March 2022, the first jackets were properly made available in the avatar shop, obtainable for free. 2D clothing, formerly being known only as "clothing", was also renamed to "classic clothing" at this point.
