pewdie123t32 is an account that was used by PewDiePie, who is currently the fourth most subscribed-to content creator on YouTube. It rapidly gained a large following due to a live-stream in February 2019 involving his satirical feud with rival channel T-Series.[1]

Controversy[]

Within minutes of PewDiePie beginning to play Roblox games on the livestream, his place was rapidly filled up by players, which in turn caused it to appear on the front page. This was assumed to have given the staff suspicions of bots being used, as pewdie123t32 was soon terminated after the stream and his place was struck with a content deletion.[2] It was later revealed that Psyduckc was responsible for the botting.[citation needed]

Response[]

pewdie123t32's termination drew criticism from both the internal Roblox community (including Roblox YouTubers such as Nathorix and MyUsernamesThis) and PewDiePie's fanbase. There were a variety of arguments brought up in favor of PewDiePie, particularly about how Roblox may not have wanted to associate themselves with him personally due to his past political controversies with the mainstream media (e.g. Wall Street Journal).[3] Additionally, a player who met pewdie123t32 in Bee Swarm Simulator tweeted about how he was warned for simply saying "HI PEWDIEPIE" in-game, which resulted in further confusion from the community towards Roblox's moderation.[4]

The ordeal was clarified by Roblox in a Developer Forum post, where they mentioned that the use of 'pewdie' itself was considered a 'negative meme' in their view, and because of this they did not explicitly want players to be using the term in their usernames. They ended the paragraph by admitting that PewDiePie's 'legacy account' was deleted by mistake as part of this policy, and that it would be reinstated.[5]

Aftermath[]

Even after pewdie123t32 was unbanned, Roblox community members and YouTubers continued to criticize the staff for blacklisting the phrase "pewdie", specifically drawing attention to how users who uploaded clothing or published ads that mentioned his name in any form would be struck down while the players received warnings. A few days after the incident, multiple mainstream media networks and websites published articles about it.[6][7][8][9]
