Egg Hunt 2018 The Great Yolktales Trailer

Egg Hunt: The Great Yolktales was the ninth annual Egg Hunt event that started on March 28, 2018, and ended April 20. For this egg hunt, players had to find eggs across different worlds. Certain eggs could be found at random, while others were earned by completing quests. The players received a badge when an egg was found and the egg corresponding to the badge was obtained as a wearable hat as well. The game is playable on iOS, Android and Xbox One[1] in addition to PC. The game is still playable, but the egg hats will no longer be given.

Egg Hunt 2019: Scrambled in Time Go to the Mirage map. This is the only egg accessible in the map. In the map, find four mirrors and rotate them until they reflect light from the sun. The fourth mirror may reflect for only a while before the absence of the light. This means that the egg has spawned. If the fourth mirror's light doesn't disappear, it still means it's reflected and done. If the fourth mirror doesn't seem to be reflecting light at any rotation, the mirror probably invisibly reflected the light. Go over to where you saw the big black circle and go in the middle of it, where a black, egg shaped mesh is held before you. Touch it to get the egg.

Development[]

The game was officially announced on March 6 via a post on the Roblox Blog.[2] Development for this game began in October.[3] The game was created by Fifteam.

Interview[]

The following interview was between Thundermaker300 and Aotrou, buildthomas, and Builder_Boy on Error: Page "User blog:RBLXDeveloperInterviews/Aotrou, buildthomas, and Builder_Boy: Egg Hunt 2018: The Great Yolktales" does not exist., as part of the Developer Connections Project.

What was it like developing Egg Hunt 2018: The Great Yolktales?
  • buildthomas: It was by far one of the most stressful, but also one of the most exciting things that I have been able to do on the Roblox platform so far. We spent several months intensively designing eggs, gameplay for the eggs, unique worlds for the players to play around in, and bouncing ideas back and forth so many times I lost count to make them perfect. We had a lot more resources than Egg Hunt 2017 had, both in terms of development time but also in team size, so we tried to make a lot of conscious decisions about the game design to improve the experience for players. It was very difficult and a large amount of work, and we definitely spent many long days and alnighters together fixing bugs and improving features, but I'm really satisfied with and proud of the result that we ended up with together as a team.
  • Aotrou: A lot of work. We wanted to include a lot of maps and mechanics that are pretty unique to Roblox, but with a great team of developers and support from Roblox staff - many of which are experienced game developers themselves - we were able to make a quality game.
What challenges did you have to overcome while developing? What was the most challenging?
  • buildthomas: The developers of these event games have full creative freedom over the game's design. The only part where Roblox comes in is approving the ideas that we come up, but they are usually very lenient. The challenge was coming up with all of these unique egg and world ideas that haven't been done before by previous Egg Hunt games, and were also thematically interesting and relevant to players. We spent a long time coming up with the ideas for the eggs and the worlds for that reason.
At some point in development, we had a design nailed down for about 55 eggs or so, and then Roblox told us that they couldn't do more than 45 eggs due to limited time available from the Art team that creates all of the egg meshes. We had a really hard time scrapping 10 eggs since we liked all of them so much!
Part of our list of goals was, of course, to make sure that we addressed most of the issues that Egg Hunt 2017 had in terms of gameplay where we could. However, in event games there is usually not enough time to make the game exactly the way you want to, since you're working against a really tight deadline. We definitely avoided most of the significant issues that were present in Egg Hunt 2017’s design, such as the large maps that often felt empty or lacking detail, by spreading the detail out more across the maps and reducing their size a little bit, and overall being more optimal with the building efforts to ensure that mobile devices could still play these maps. We also added the custom movement system as a way to traverse the map better, and made the game more socially engaging by having players hold up the eggs that they collect with an animation, so that they can easily screenshot and share it on social media. There are many more big and small improvements like that which are easy to spot if you are a bit familiar with common game design practices. What I personally regret is that we ended up with a few too many "fetch quest"-like gameplay situations for the eggs, that we had a bit too much dialogue altogether, and that for some boss eggs we did not properly instance them so players had to wait to get in often. All in all, the improvements we made definitely outweight the deficits by far, and so we definitely succeeded in this challenge in my opinion.
Finally, what was personally challenging for me is working on the Ready Player One event together with Ravenshield, making sure that all the puzzles were very obscure and would not be found by exploiters, but also not by the other developers! We had to be really careful, since we had to make sure that the other developers would not be able to figure anything out from the way we had named things in Studio, and to make sure that exploiters would not be able to learn anything from client-sided resources. Only about 8-10 people in the world knew about the development of the Ready Player One event in total, and only about 4 of those knew about the Egg Hunt puzzles before launch. It's amazing that we were able to keep it a secret all the way up to the launch of the event and I’m really happy about how the Ready Player One event progressed in general. This was definitely a huge challenge.
  • Aotrou: For building, device limitations. The game had to run on the iPhone 5, which has very little capabilities for the size of game we had which resulted in a lot of assets being cut.
What did you enjoy most while developing Egg Hunt 2018: The Great Yolktales?
  • buildthomas: What I personally enjoyed the most is expanding my knowledge on team leadership, considering we had such a large team. There were 13 main contributors to the Egg Hunt game with differing skills, talents, and levels of experience, so leading this diverse and talented team and making sure we all worked efficiently, while also keeping everyone motivated and engaged in the project, was a fun challenge for myself and the three sub-leads in the project.
In a technical sense, I really enjoyed working on all of the movement mechanics, special objects like the cannons and zipwires, and especially scripting all of the UI, and I'm really proud of how this all turned out. We also had a great time designing the data management, custom movement, party/friend system, and the teleporting systems, which really gave me a lot of knowledge that I can reuse in my future projects on Roblox.
I loved bouncing ideas back and forth with my team and iterating constantly on things until they were perfect. I really felt in sync with the majority of the team most of the time, which was a great feeling, and we couldn't have pulled off what we did if we didn't have such a great team spirit. I was amazed at how well team members were able to interpret my feedback and translate that into features and changes that made the game much better, and how motivated they were to make this game the best event game ever.
  • Aotrou: The team coming together and working for hours in TeamCreate, entire maps would be made and transformed before our eyes.
What was it like to develop a game that was featured in an official Roblox event?
  • buildthomas: It was quite stressful considering the community (and also we ourselves) wanted the event to outdo the Egg Hunt 2017 both in terms of design but also in the amount of content. There was a lot of production pressure on the team for that reason, which was both a cause of stress but also a great source of motivation.
People can be very harsh in their feedback though, especially in the first days after launch when there were still a lot of bugs. People would often complain that we had developed for so many months, how could there still be bugs? Of course, when you are developing a game against a deadline, you have to prioritize what to spend your time on, and most of the time there is not enough time to fix everything before launch. There is this thing called the Hofstadter's law, which is defined as "It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law.", which is really applicable here. No matter how long you develop a game, things will always run over the deadline, it's just how game development works. Huge shoutouts to the QA Team for helping us by reporting so many bugs and suggestions (about 1200+) and helping us in getting them fixed (1000+) before launch!
I was really grateful for the community for being forgiving in nature; when we fixed the majority of the issues after the first 1-2 days, we've only ever really seen positive feedback from players after that point.
  • Aotrou: Like we had big shoes to fill and a lot of people to please - EH17 was such a great game and we wanted to meet the quality they had with our own game. We feel like we reached that goal.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
  • buildthomas: It was great that so many players are so passionate about Egg Hunt events and that they liked so many of the innovative features that we added to game compared to previous event games. I think overall, disregarding vocal minorities, the feedback was really positive and I was happy that we were able to excite and engage so many people with the game. It made it worth all of the hard work that we'd done the months before. Thanks to everyone who played!
  • Builder_Boy: I would just like to say that so much unseen work goes into producing a game as large as the egg hunt. Charts, schedules, lists, design documents and plans all needed to be drawn up before and during development. When it comes to building, coding, or designing the visual elements it is important to know nothing is done randomly everything went through a discussion and planning phase. When working on a large game communication is essential. I think most people don’t get to see this side of the development process but it really is the core of game creation.
  • Aotrou: Gurt is Good.

  • The description of the Feathered Fabergégg is a reference to the 1990s rap song, Mama Said Knock You Out, by LL Cool J.

    • The Unknown Egg is actually the Egg of Origin from Egg Hunt 2019, since the Mirage setting takes place in the past, and the egg looks exactly like the evil egg while it's in its forcefield.
  • The description for the Dance Dance Eggolution egg references the song “Dancing Queen” by ABBA.

The hacker group ‘fsociety’ used an arcade known as the “FUN SOCIETY” in an old amusement park on the docks of New York as a base of operations. The letters U and N, however, have gone missing to coincidentally spell “F SOCIETY”. Later on in the event, the door to the arcade opened and lead to an arcade. The NPC in the arcade calls the group of people residing there the esociety, an obvious reference to the fsociety.
    • After the April 5th update when the arcade was opened to reveal Fractured Space, a few characters from the show can be found inside all wearing signature masks from the show.

Other[]

  • The game features 50 eggs (counting the Stained Glass Egg, Mysterious Sugar Egg of the Search Continuing, Egg of Origin, Video Star Egg and Eggmin 2019).
  • Gurt was published to the marketplace as a shoulder accessory in August, obtained as a prize for completing an objective in the Roblox Summer Tournament (2018).
  • The user PartyMonsterToast won the Egg Hunt 2018 Custom Egg Contest and her egg is available in the hunt. Being the Radio Egg , which was fully designed by her.
  • In each world, a literal red herring (redfish) can be found. This was added to distract players from the eggs, as a red herring is also a distraction or diversion.
    • This concept was a prank by InsanelyLuke and Aotrou.
  • Originally, as soon as the game was finished, the doors to the library would open and allow players to exit the library while old, scrapped eggs would rain from the skies.[5] This idea, however, was turned down.[6]
  • This was the last egg hunt to include non-game eggs, if Mysterious Sugar Egg of the Search Continuing is taken into account.
  • During development, at the 50th badge spot, there was an odd badge with the name of "50. And take it with you when you're gone..." featuring fanart of DieSoft (by GrottyPuff) who worked on Egg Hunt 2017.
  • During development, the badges on the game spelled out a sentence on the images saying "WHAT'S UP GUYS" and "AOTROU". Aotrou is one of the developers of this year's hunt.

  • The placeholder title for the game during development was called: Animal Crackers: The Game.

  • Fractured Space, the world housing the Fifteam Egg, features assets from every other world, including assets that were scrapped during development, such as the Bird House (Undernest) and the Castle that the egg can be found it (References in the storybook in Merlin's Swamp)

  • Despite being the 9th Egg Hunt, it is technically the 10th overall. This is due to the fact that the 2010 egg hunt was redone as the game had broken.
  • Egg Hunt 2018 surpassed the concurrent player count of Jailbreak (which at the time was the longrunning #1 game) within minutes of the game being released which was also running an event (Ready Player One).
  • On April Fool's Day, fake Fifteam Eggs spawned around the library, usually in places that were difficult to reach, and awarded the player nothing. They have since been removed to avoid confusion with the actual location.
  • Several things were changed during the Easter Egg Hunt itself, such as only up to five players being able to be Merlin's Swamp at any one time as opposed to the standard 48 when it first started, the sewage current in the Secret Hideout in Sunnyside Heights goes up and down much faster and a ladder is installed to access the roof instead of having to wall jump. The boss music for the Skeleton King was changed and the houses near Vash from the Undernest are now colored purple to make his location more obvious.
  • Pieces 4/11 and 9/11 to complete the Portal for Mr. Roblox were originally beside a few crates inside the Chocolate Factory and inside one of the ports that unlock after defeating Rabid Rabbit respectively. However, most likely due to complaints that it was time-consuming to obtain the pieces and it was almost identical to obtaining the Treasured Cuisine Egg and Super Egg, the two pieces were shifted to their current positions.
  • The Egg Hunt was supposed to end on April 11 but was extended to the 20th for players to have more time to collect Eggs as stated on a Twitter post by ROBLOX.
  • Some eggs used to have their names altered in-game to be different from their official name. This is because the developers weren't aware of the final names until the hats were released, the day before release.

Ready Player One[]

  • A quality assurance tester for the game known as VullcanRaven was the first to find the Golden Wings of the Pathfinder for the Ready Player One event. It is unknown whether the account was, in fact, able to get it through the hunt, but this has acted as evidence that the final mission may take place in The Great Yolktales.
    • VullcanRaven was soon terminated, possibly to avoid confusion over the prize winner.
  • The Stained Glass Egg is the disguise hinted in the Dominus Venari mission in the Ready Player One event.
  • There are 9 worlds, which include Fractured Space (World 6), Mega Corporation (World 7.5), the Office of Creators (World 8) and the Mirage (World 9). Fractured Space contains the Fifteam Egg, and Mega Corporation hosts a final confrontation between the Gunter and Dr. Mega. After the Gunter has gotten 7/10 questions correct, they will be transported to the Office of Creators where they will view a panorama of Roblox's history before receiving the Golden Wings of the Pathfinder.
  • The obstacle course in Mega Corporation (World 7.5) was nerfed heavily and you will now have 180 seconds to answer the 10 questions, up from 60 after April 6.
  • This is the third event to have an egg related to a sponsor. The first was The Three Stooges and the second was Walking with Dinosaurs.
  • The Stained Glass Egg was originally unobtainable on the Xbox One port of Roblox, due to the fact that there's no Chat-Tab to use Dance Commands on the top of the small, blue tree stump.
    • But this changed on the game's latest update. The player now just needs to jump on the top of the tree stump to trigger the purple object.
  • Since the event had ended, Players do not need to wear the Stained Glass Egg in Harboiled City to click the "URGENT" sign anymore. This update would most likely be added because players can no longer get the Stained Glass Egg .
