Messages

Messages are a form of communication between two users by sending messages through the Roblox website. Roblox also uses messages in the form of system messages to inform users about various changes to their account.

Layout[]

Inbox[]

The Inbox holds any messages that have not previously been archived in a list format. Each entry includes the sender, the subject title and preview of body, and the time the message was sent. Users will receive notifications from Roblox or other users that have sent them messages. They can also archive, mark as read, mark as unread, and mark all as read by checking the boxes and clicking the respective action at the top or the bottom of the page. Unopened messages (or messages marked as Unread) will appear as a different color compared to read messages. Users can also do this at the top of a message while reading it, however they cannot mark it as read or unread while reading the respective message.

Sent[]

The Sent tab is very similar to the Inbox, however; it shows messages that a player has sent to others rather than messages that the user is receiving. Unlike the Inbox they cannot do actions such as archiving, marking as read, or marking as unread, and the checkboxes for these actions are not visible either. When opening a message they cannot reply to it either as it is a message said user has sent to another user.

News[]

The News (formerly Notifications) holds announcements sent by Roblox Administrators containing information about events, community activities, and other important updates.

There are messages which are part of a user's Inbox. They are automatically sent to a user on Roblox, and cannot be archived, since they automatically delete themselves after a given period of time. News posts usually notify users about recent updates, which go anywhere from critical bug patches to advertisements about the latest gear.

Archive[]

The Archive holds any messages that have been archived from the Inbox. Messages are not deleted, so any previous message that has been archived can be viewed here and restored if necessary. Much like the Inbox they can mark messages as read and mark them as unread but the option to mark all as read is not available and instead of archiving messages the option to send them back to their inbox is available instead. Any message including ones sent from Roblox can be archived here and sent back to the inbox if the users wish.

Requirements[]

In order to message another user, a player must meet these requirements:

Account must be 13+ (<13 users can still message friends).
Privacy settings for "Who can message me?" must be set appropriately.
Account must be older than one day.

Types of messages[]

Friend requests	After sending a friend request, a message will be sent to the user who sent the friend request to notify that their request was accepted.	Example of accepted friend request.
Trading messages	When sending Trades, a notification will be received in the form of a message when the trade is accepted, declined, or countered. Users also receive message notifications when they receive a trade request.	Example of Trade message.
Premium subscription	After a Roblox Premium subscription has expired, the user will receive a message notification informing them that they no longer have premium benefits.	Example of Premium message.
UGC marketplace refund messages	If a user purchases a UGC Roblox item that gets a Content Deletion, they will usually receive a refund in Robux for the full amount they paid. If a user is refunded or not depends on if Roblox has already done a refund wave for the specific item. Before Roblox updated the way they handle moderated marketplace items, purchasing a content deleted item after the refund wave had already occurred would result in no refund. This is no longer possible as moderated UGC is now privated.	Example of refund message.
Private server price change	If a user owns a Private server with automatic renewal on and the developer changes the price, Roblox will turn off automatic renewal for the private server and the user will receive a message notification regarding the change.	Example of price change message
Suicidal Help Messages	The helpful letter message is an automatic message is sent out to users who utilize Roblox to articulate their struggles with life and possibly the intent of ending their own life. The purpose of this message is to encourage them to stop sharing it on the site, and rather reach out for help otherwise.
Team Create invitation	If a user is invited to a Team Create for a game, the user will receive a message notification letting the user know they can contribute and edit the game.	Example of team create invitation message
Developer feedback	Developer feedback messages can be sent out to members of the Developer forum if the Roblox Developer Relations department wants feedback.	Example of a developer feedback message
Media disapproval	The media disapproved message is sent out to user which uploaded audio that got disapproved for various reasons. The message lets the user know the reason it was denied as well as the amount of Robux refunded.	Example of a media disapproval message
Account Age Up	If a player had their account age set to an age below 13, upon turning 13 they will get a message saying their privacy settings has been changed.	Example of an Account Age Up message
Appointed Group Owner	If a player is transferred as an owner of using a group using the owner detail in Configure Group then they will receive this message.	Example of a group ownership appointed message
Insufficient Private server funds	When a users private server attempts to renew and the user does not have enough Robux to afford the renewal they will receive this message.	Example of an insufficient private server funds message
Roblox credit pending	If a user owns moderated classic clothing (classic shirts, pants, or t-shirts), they will eventually receive a message offering them a refund and to accept the agreement. The clothing must not be made by the user themselves and they must have not known about the asset being against the rules at the time.	Example of a Roblox credit pending message
Premium Payout received	If a user gets enough premium users or enough play time from premium users they will receive a Premium Payout and when they do receive this they will receive a message notifying them about this.	Example of a Premium Payout message
Copyright content removed	If a player or third party successfully takes down an experience or asset for legal reasons, the uploader of the content will receive a message telling them what content they had was copyrighted, who the owner is, and whether it is their first or second DMCA strike. Refunded Robux purchase	If a Robux purchase is refunded, the player will have their Robux removed and receive this message. Since Robux is non-refundable, this message is usually followed by a ban.	Example of a Robux refund message
Right to Erasure	If a user that has played your game requests their account to be deleted, the developer will receive this message. If the game(s) in question did have a datastore you must remove that specific user-id since Roblox will eventually take action against your account.	Example of a Right to Erasure message

Trivia[]

In the past, if you went to the Sent tab and clicked on a message, it would have said [USERNAME] wrote even though it's actually [YOUR USERNAME] that wrote it.
People were able to send messages to themselves by clicking "(View Public Profile)" at your Profile and clicking "Send Message". This was later removed, and now the buttons are removed when viewing your profile.
Because of an update, you can no longer delete messages from users; now you can only send them to your archive.
Players frequently complain about spam bots, which is still happening to the present day.
Although players cannot send messages to non-friends in a <13 account, they will still receive messages from the official Roblox account.
Messages used to be the main way of communication before the Chat was implemented.
There is also a message that Roblox will send you if you reported something and the report was accepted, Its most likely to get one if the thing you reported has been banned.
News were once called "notifications", which caused confusion to new users. The name was changed to "News" as a result to the confusion.
- News posts are were usually sent by admins, but now it is only labeled as Roblox.
- There used to commonly be surveys for 1,000 Robux if the player participated in events, and many more important messages. Currently, they are mainly just news and community activity.
Before 2018, it was possible to send messages to multiple recipients at once. This ability was likely removed to prevent spamming.
