Layered clothing (also known as 3D clothing) is a subgroup of clothing, a form of avatar customization on Roblox. It was initially announced during Roblox's Investor Day (February 2021).[1] The feature allows users to pick combinations of 3D clothing to customize their avatar with arbitrary 3D layered clothing items.[2] Layered clothing can be worn over classic clothing.
History[]
In November 2020, Roblox announced skinned meshes, which would lead to newly advanced features such as layered clothing where it was first mentioned.[3]
In April 2021, Roblox launched the Cage Mesh Deformer, where it shrink wraps geometries on top of each other in real time, which can be done on high-end or low-end devices. The shrink wrapping can allow users to "wrap" 3D items in real-time over other items or avatars.
From June to September 2021, many pieces of layered clothing, primarily jackets, were uploaded to the marketplace, although they were off-sale.
On October 20, 2021, players were given early access through a file on GitHub which once downloaded, would send them to Roblox Studio to test the items.[4][5]
In January 2022, Roblox officially uploaded more layered clothes onto the Avatar Shop, this time for 1 Robux. An error message came up on purchase, however using the inspect element feature, the player could buy the clothing and could wear it in certain games, namely Natural Disaster Survival. They were eventually taken off-sale, with the items of clothing being wiped from all players inventories.
On February 4, 2022, Roblox reuploaded the layered Clothing, but they weren't available for purchase, but could have been purchased by administrators.
In the beginning of March 2022, Roblox began to make a selection of free jackets available in the avatar shop. On March 7, 2022, approved UGC accessory creators could begin uploading their own jackets.
On March 14, 2022, a selection of free T-shirts and pants by Roblox were gradually released over the following days. On March 23, 2022, approved UGC accessory creators could begin uploading their own T-shirts and pants.
On April 4, 2022, all other forms of Layered clothing (shirts, shorts, dresses & skirts, sweaters and shoes) were added to the avatar shop. With said additions, Roblox formally announced layered clothing.[6][7] On April 11, 2022, all types of layered clothing except shoes were opened for approved UGC accessory creators to upload.
