A message about ongoing maintenance in an orange banner on the website

A player losing connection in-game during maintenance

On Roblox, maintenance occurs when Roblox staff temporarily shut down the entire website and services to perform crucial updates or general maintenance. Once maintenance starts, players will be unable to connect to servers, and players already in games will be automatically kicked from servers. During maintenance, any attempts to go to a Roblox page will be redirected to a generic maintenance page.

Prior to maintenance, yellow/orange banners will be displayed on the website, informing all players about the maintenance to prevent any sitewide panic. They may alert players that access to servers will temporarily be unavailable.

Some maintenances do not require the website to be shut down. Instead, an orange banner will appear on the website, stating that the website is currently undergoing maintenance and that players may experience connection issues when joining or playing a game.

Before, maintenance usually occurs when most people are asleep or at school in different time zones. However, by 2019, maintenances are now usually rare, albeit may start at any time in emergencies, sometimes without notice.

Opening a Roblox maintenance bookmark while Roblox is not in maintenance will redirect to the home page.

Online and in-game maintenance bugs

This is an example of a server running during maintenance.

  • Sometimes during maintenance, some of the game servers have not been fully shut down. These servers and clients in-game are unable to request data for Roblox assets. Within the next few minutes, some servers will be forced shut down based on the command given by the maintenance team.
  • Sometimes during maintenance, players can still teleport to other games/places without getting a connection error.
  • If you're trying to save/publish changes to a game in Roblox Studio during maintenance, a message will pop-up saying "You need to log into ROBLOX in order to save". However, pressing the OK button will automatically exit you off the place and discard any and all work.

Wall maintenance

Walloffline

An example of a group wall being shut down for maintenance

Wall maintenance is a period of maintenance conducted on the group wall, often blocking users from using the group wall with a notice: "Wall is temporarily offline for maintenance, please retry later."

Maintenance banners

MaintenanceBanner

The current maintenance banner.

Typically, an orange banner proclaiming that "Roblox will be down for maintenance" will be displayed on the Roblox website as a warning to players that the website will be shutting down shortly. When Roblox is playable during maintenance, the banner will instead say "Roblox is currently undergoing maintenance. You may encounter connectivity issues."

During maintenance phases where purchasing Builders Club or Robux are disabled, an additional banner may be present alerting users of their inability to make any real-life purchases on Roblox.

In-game maintenance GUI (Phishing)

MgxMobile

An instance of an MGX GUI

The in-game maintenance GUI is a GUI published on places made by users who attempt to steal Robux from Roblox admins. This will tell players to enter login information to play the game. Mostly new inexperienced users try to get through by putting their login information. When full information is entered, it sends the logs that can be used by the publisher. As the publisher gets in, they take something from, such as currency, inventory, emails, etc. or also closing an account or trying to get the account banned. The publisher may be likely to be banned or terminated, and the stolen account's lost items may be retrieved by contacting appeals@roblox.com or info@roblox.com with evidence.

On this GUI, there is a message that says Roblox is undergoing maintenance; these claims are false, as there is no available code like scripts to put Roblox into undergoing maintenance, and real maintenance messages will never ask for any log-in info.

Variations to the maintenance page

Throughout Roblox's history, multiple maintenance pages have been used.

We are upgrading ROBLOX!

Stay Tuned... We'll be back online soon.

YOU WILL BE REDIRECTED TO ROBLOX WHEN WE ARE BACK UP

We are currently performing a scheduled maintenance. Our site will be back up shortly!

The site is currently offline for maintenance and upgrades. Please check back soon!

After the maintenance was completed, the text would change to "We have performed maintenance that requires you to restart your browser. PLEASE CLOSE YOUR BROWSER and revisit www.roblox.com."

This maintenance page features the O NOES hat. Despite going through multiple changes, it was used for three and a half years from 2008 and is the longest-used maintenance screen.

The last record of this maintenance page existing was on November 13th, 2013, showing the latter "We have performed maintenance that requires you to restart your browser. PLEASE CLOSE YOUR BROWSER and revisit www.roblox.com." message.

July 11th, 2009–March 7th, 2015
Second maintenance
The site is currently offline for maintenance and upgrades. Please check back soon! From left to right, the Robloxians present on the maintenance page are Matt Dusek, DocStrange, Erik.cassel, Builderman, Telamon, Wookong, and Noob007. Despite Erik's death in 2013, this image was still used for another year after that.

It was used as an alternate maintenance screen starting in 2009, but was also the screen when Roblox was forced offline besides maintenance (connection issues, DDoS, etc.).

It has 6 buttons, each one containing a letter and spelling out "ROBLOX"; clicking on any of the buttons would reload the page.

In 2014 to 2015, this page would be seen for a short time before you would be redirected to the then-latest maintenance page, presumably so Administrators could log in.

ROBLOX is down for maintenance right now.

Even great builders need rest.

This maintenance page is first known to have been used at the start of August 2014 and was last officially used towards the end of the year.

This maintenance page still exists, and you can see it if you visit this link, however it is no longer officially used by ROBLOX.

O NOES Version.

ROBLOX is undergoing scheduled maintenance.

ROBLOX will be down for maintenance for the next 60 minutes.

There were two variants to this maintenance page. One features the O NOES hat while the other features a hard hat.

This maintenance page has a timer, which tells how many minutes and hours of maintenance time. However, it is only counting down to the predicted time as to when it is complete and may not have been accurate.

Apr7-2015 maintenance
ROBLOX will Return at 10 PM Pacific This maintenance page was rarely seen in early to mid 2015 when ROBLOX had a planned time for maintenance to end. It is functionally identical to the 2009-2015 maintenance page except for featuring the 2015-2018 banner with an amended statement on when ROBLOX would come back online.

There is no exactly known time range as to when this maintenance page was in use due to the lack of records.

Fifth maintenance

The fifth maintenance page.

The site is currently offline for maintenance and upgrades. Please check back soon! The input form to bypass maintenance and head to ROBLOX is hidden in one variant, and shown in the other, albeit it is more bulky than in previous versions of the maintenance page.

ROBLOX maintenance is complete. You must restart your browser to get into ROBLOX.

This page only appears after maintenance is finished. This tells players to restart the page, but may sometimes not work on the first try. This page will pop up when the first servers on Roblox go back online. It is the same image as the former login screen but with the words "BACK ON TRACK". Unlike the maintenance page from this era, this end of maintenance screen still exists and can be accessed here, however it is no longer officially used by ROBLOX.

Maintenance Page 20-15
N/A

Similar to the 2009 maintenance screen. This does not show the text "The site is currently offline for maintenance and upgrades. Please check back soon!". This also has the early 2015 maintenance picture instead of the 2009 maintenance picture. This would usually be seen at the start of maintenance before later redirecting to the normal maintenance site with the correct design.

We're making things more awesome. Be back soon.

As of late 2018, this page is currently being used. One variant includes the writable text box with 6 buttons, spelling out "ROBLOX". Clicking on any of these buttons will submit a form inconclusively, the same way they formerly would on previous iterations of the maintenance page, whilst the other variant only includes the image.
