Left: Example of an active party. Right: Example of the party feature being used in-experience through Topbar.
On the Roblox website, you were able to create a party in an online chat. This feature allowed users to join Experiences together. If the party leader (the one who created the party) joined an Experience, everyone in that party would be forced to join their Experience and server with them. On Xbox One, users in the same Xbox Live party with Roblox open would join the Experience of the party. If someone left and joined a new Experience, the entire party would follow them. This led to a lot of frustration because as people were playing an Experience if someone else joined a different one, they were automatically moved without warning. Parties were typically used in friend groups to join the same Experience together. If the party leader joins an Experience, Roblox would have automatically found a server that fitted anyone. This allowed users to guarantee to be able to play with one another.
Players were only allowed to be in one party at a time. Joining a party in a different chat whilst being in a party had you leave the previous one. There has been speculation that parties would return as "squads", as seen in the client files, but that has since been debunked.
Changes and removal[]
In 2015, this feature was overhauled and was no longer available to people not on your friends list. In 2019, this feature was removed to "modernize" the site but ended up making the community upset.
New Version[]
At Roblox Developers Conference 2024, it was announced that a revised version of the feature would be added. This time, it was age-locked to users 9 years old or older. It will allow users to communicate with both text and voice within and outside Experiences. In early 2025, Roblox will also release an API allowing Experience developers to see who is in a party and who they are playing with. On December 2, 2024 the website parties was readded (13+ users until December 8 2024) alongside adding a way to use it in Experience.
