A classic R6 avatar

R6 is an animation rig. R6 means "6 body parts" or "6 joints". Players can enable this body type when customizing their avatar. Game developers can enable whether an avatar uses the R6 rig, R15, and Rthro and its Unlocked Scaling. Despite concerns when R15 was released that R6 would become retired, the Roblox developers announced in multiple blog posts that R6 will always be available to players.[1][2]

R6 is now technically deprecated as they have limitations, and are no longer used by a majority of players, especially new players. Attempting to switch to R6 without agreeing, will result in this message:

R6 characters have limitations. If you switch, all unsupported items will be removed.

Usage[]

R6 was the original body type of all players on Roblox. It gives the player a torso, two legs, two arms, and a head. These can be distinguished when a player breaks or resets and all the body parts detach from the character. At the time, players would move in a repetitive style, with no height changes to show walking and steps. Unlike later avatar types, R6's arms and legs are not broken into smaller joints and therefore move as one piece. Animation packages and body scaling are incompatible with R6 avatars, and by extension Rthro. Also, R6 can fit weld arm scripts and certain animations that would be much harder to do for R15.

R6 to R15 Adaptation[]

On August 24, 2023 Roblox began beta testing of enabling R15 tech in R6 games. It is likely that it might break many R6 games.

Trivia[]

This section is a trivia section. Please relocate any relevant information into other sections of the article.

  • The base rig would receive changes through the years 2009, 2013 and 2014.
  • On the topic of animations, on April 23, 2016 and earlier, when you jumped, your arms would stretch backwards instead of just forwards. Roblox used a different animation technology that focuses on merging the character actions, However this caused animations to be extremely broken. In some cases not loading or bugging out, On June 20, 2016 R6 received its last major update.
  • This rig can be used to do glitches such as dance clipping, was used to corner clip (fixed), it is very recommended to be used in obbies or such.
