For the unit of length, see Stud (unit).
Stud

A singular stud.

HappyHomeStudFloor

The floor of the Happy Home of Robloxia, which has blue studs.

Stud is a SurfaceType. The current studs are blank squares without a symbol on them, unlike the previous styles. The studs initially started as a 3D mesh before moving to a circular shape containing an "R" icon. It was later changed to a square shape, which would be kept and updated over the years. Studs are connectable to Inlet, Universal, and Weld surfaces. Studs no longer appear on newer created places or parts, but are still accessible via scripts or plugins, as well as in old models and the classic baseplate starter place.

Originally, studs would appear on a player's avatar if they had no shirt or pants equipped (due to the 1.0 body being made out of Beveled bricks). This feature was removed in early 2013.

History[]

2003 - 2005[]

Studs, called bumps at the time, were 3D and would pop out of a brick. As inlets did not exist at the time, they would connect to any surface, much like the modern Glue or Weld SurfaceType.

2003 to 2005 studs

2006 - 2009[]

Studs are not popped out anymore and instead are textures on the block. The studs became circle studs, similar to LEGO. These studs have become a staple of older versions of Roblox.

Early 2009[]

Studs have taken on a square form, now lacking any icon or lettering on them.

2009 - October 2013[]

The letter "R" (for Roblox) is implemented onto the square studs, becoming one of the most iconic versions of the studs.

October 2013 - January 2017[]

Square studs are refined for the first time in four years. They are given normal maps to improve shading and make the studs appear more 3D.

January - March 2017[]

The "R" icon is changed to a tilted "O" to represent the logo change.

March 2017 – present[]

Roblox's "O" icon is removed from the studs.

Trivia[]

This section is a trivia section. Please relocate any relevant information into other sections of the article.

  • The old Roblox studs look similar to the LEGO studs.
    • Contrary to popular belief, Roblox was not sued by the LEGO company for circle studs. The LEGO company does not have a patent on the LEGO brick.
  • Some people dislike the new square studs and will make textures that resemble or are the same as the old circular ones.
  • Prior to studs becoming 2 dimensional, studs and glue were merged under one surface known as "Bumps", which functioned identically to glue and had the appearance of a 3 dimensional stud which would pop out from the brick. Nowadays, attempting to set a part's surface to bumps will automatically switch to glue.
  • Sometime in December[what year?], an update was made, where inserting a brick would no longer result in it being sided with studs on the top.
