Team chat is a chatting feature added on ROBLOX in 2008. It can be activated by typing "%" (percent sign, or pressing 5 while holding the shift button) before typing the adorning message. The message will be sent to all the players who are in the same team as the player who typed the message. This function is only usable when the % is the very first character in the message.

Team chat is a feature of the in-game text chat that limits the sender to only output the message to the sender's team, and ignore any other players. It is activated by typing "<code>%</code>" (), and does not work when a space is inserted before the percent sign, therefore this function is only usable when the <code>%</code> (percent sign) is the very first character in the message. This function only exists in free chat, meaning safechat players cannot see or use this function at all. The demonstration provided here shows how and where it is useful to use this.

Here is an example of the function for team chat:

  +
Typed message:
% Shoot that guy

  +
% Advance up, we can get a better view there.
Will come up in team chat.

  +
Output: Black background does not apply to the final result.
% Shoot that guy

  +
:<span style="background-color:black"><span style="color:cyan">Player:</span> <span style="color:white">(TEAM) Advance up, we can get a better view there.</span></span>
Will NOT come up in team chat, since there is a space before the percent sign.

  +
Also note that the percent character must be inserted first, not a space; however, a space should be put after the character, else all players can see the message, example shown here.
While using team chat, if you type:

% My team can see this

It will show up as:

My team can see this

  +
Typed message:
Notice:You must put the "%" symbol next to your text, not a space. Although nothing interesting will occur, other than the symbol disappearing, the text will actually only appear for your's team's eyes only and other players in the other team(s) cannot see said text.

  +
%GUYS, FOCUS!

  +
Output: Black background does not apply to the final result.
Example:

  +
:<span style="background-color:black"><span style="color:cyan">Player:</span> <span style="color:white">%GUYS, FOCUS!</span></span>

  +
Note the missing (TEAM) identifier, meaning this message could be seen.
%Get the flag.

<hr />
If there is no team, then the sentence will be seen by all players and the % will be shown. The team that appears briefly if the player has a laggy computer (called neutral) does not get called as a "team," and if they type with the percents and attempt to teamchat nothing will happen.

The function is more oriented to those playing in war games and other team-based genres; in a roleplaying game where teams are careers and identities, this function would serve the least useful, the only worthy exception being the police needing to communicate back and forth.
Team Chat is helpful for making up a plan or giving out a strategy for a game without the other team knowing, especially for war games with teams.

  +
Without the use of team chat, the opposition may attempt trial-and-error to foil any of the team's plans.
Normally, without team chat, the other player may know the plans and/or even attempt to foil the plan. However, because it comes from free chat, safechat players may not see the chat and may not even follow said command. Safechat players include guests, players who have not yet created an account in Roblox.

A common mistake that is made by newer users of Roblox prior to a Winter 2012 update is typing out (TEAM) instead of writing %. If (TEAM) is simply typed, it is not accepted as teamchatting, therefore the other team is able to read the context of the message.

Trivia
  +
A common mistake to note is that many believe (TEAM) is actually the function, not <code>%</code>. By typing out (TEAM) instead of writing <code>%</code>, the user believes this will be the team chat feature. This is not the case, as when (TEAM) is typed, it is not the function the system is querying, in the same case as entering a space before the percent. The system will fail to recognize it as the function and display the message to all players.
*With the new chat update within Winter 2012, the (TEAM) that appears in front of the text for the team chat will no longer show up, yet the typer's text will only be shown to his/her team, but not the other teams. As of January 2013 you need to use 2 percent signs instead of one

* As of May 18, 2013, When you type said teamchat, a (TEAM) Will come up when you teamspeak, for example if you say: % Fourth tower. It will come up as (TEAM) Fourth tower. Many players still believe teamchat is just a fake chat and everyone can see it.

Team chat is a feature of the in-game text chat that limits the sender to only output the message to the sender's team, and ignore any other players. It is activated by typing "%" (User:TheDarkness909/keypress), and does not work when a space is inserted before the percent sign, therefore this function is only usable when the % (percent sign) is the very first character in the message. This function only exists in free chat, meaning safechat players cannot see or use this function at all. The demonstration provided here shows how and where it is useful to use this.

Typed message:

% Advance up, we can get a better view there.

Output: Black background does not apply to the final result.

Player: (TEAM) Advance up, we can get a better view there.

Also note that the percent character must be inserted first, not a space; however, a space should be put after the character, else all players can see the message, example shown here.

Typed message:

%GUYS, FOCUS!

Output: Black background does not apply to the final result.

Player: %GUYS, FOCUS!

Note the missing (TEAM) identifier, meaning this message could be seen.

The function is more oriented to those playing in war games and other team-based genres; in a roleplaying game where teams are careers and identities, this function would serve the least useful, the only worthy exception being the police needing to communicate back and forth.

Without the use of team chat, the opposition may attempt trial-and-error to foil any of the team's plans.

A common mistake to note is that many believe (TEAM) is actually the function, not %. By typing out (TEAM) instead of writing %, the user believes this will be the team chat feature. This is not the case, as when (TEAM) is typed, it is not the function the system is querying, in the same case as entering a space before the percent. The system will fail to recognize it as the function and display the message to all players.
