January 2012[]

  • January 6 – Roblox Studio for the Mac reaches beta stage.[1]
  • January 13 – Hack Week begins, and universes are shown and tested.
  • January 18 – Water, buoyancy, and ropes are shown.[2] Roblox participated in a blackout on this date.
  • January 20 – New dynamic lighting is shown.[3]
  • January 21 – Roblox games can now be played on more internet browsers.
  • January 26 – Video thumbnails are shown.

February 2012[]

  • February 8 – Roblox users can now buy Roblox cards at F.Y.E. and EB Games.
  • February 16 – SWITCH3.wav no longer plays when players zoom the camera in or out.

March 2012[]

  • March 6 – After two years in operation, the Ambassador program is discontinued.
  • March 19 – Roblox improves their network physics.
  • March 20 – Roblox is featured at the Game Developer Conference.
  • March 28 – The Three Stooges event begins.
  • March 29
    • Roblox introduces thumbnails for places.
    • The website gets redesigned.

April 2012[]

  • April 1 – Compromisation of the website occurs, the catalog and the trade currency system become disabled, and, ultimately, Roblox is temporarily shut down, then brought back online.[4] The 2012 April Fools Hack article provides more information about this.
  • April 8 – Roblox's interpolation code is improved, resulting in smooth motion of objects.[5]
  • April 17 – The Three Stooges event ends.

May 2012[]

  • Around May 4 – Roblox shuts down many places in order to apply an exploit prevention plugin for all of the places.⁠[citation needed] However, once the plugin had been installed, it caused bugs in the ray cast and debris functions.⁠[citation needed]
  • May 8–10 - Users who create a new Roblox account upon logging in, the Red Roblox Cap is nowhere to be in their inventory.⁠[citation needed] This might have been a glitch in the Roblox system or an idea in which they decided to remove the hat from the user's profile but changed their mind. 
  • May 15 – The demonstration of the new V2 and V3 (Man and Woman) bodies was shown, resulting in dislike among some users regarding the bodies.
  • May 18 – The Trade System is nearing completion.

June 2012[]

  • June 4 – Roblox Studio 2.0 Beta is launched.
  • June 5 – The water feature is released.
  • June 29 – A minor site occurrence took place, sharing some similarities to the one during the April Fools incident. Some users were friended with the Roblox Roblox is a notable creator or influencer verified by Roblox Corporation. Learn more. account and others were given 1 million Robux. All actions were reverted a few hours later.

July 2012[]

  • July 12 – The Trading System is added. Man and Woman ROBLOX 3.0 packages are added to the catalog but are not placed on sale yet. The packages are, however, met with heavy criticism by many Roblox users due to its questionable appearance.
  • July 15 – Roblox releases the Hall Of Fame for ROBLOX Game Conference 2012 (RCG 2012).
  • July 17 – Both the Man and Woman packages are placed on sale, resulting in heavy criticism from many players.
  • July 19 – Roblox shows a demonstration of new looks of Roblox and graphics.

August 2012[]

  • August 3 – Roblox updates the loadstring function to prevent it from executing arbitrary Lua bytecode.
  • August 28 - The catalog layout is revamped, now showing four trending items on top, and the number of items per row is expanded from five to six, and item information has been moved so it is now displayed when the user's cursor is hovered over that item.
  • August 30 - The top bar receives minor changes, with the text of navigation links being made smaller and put next to the ROBLOX logo, as well as adding a gradient.

September 2012[]

  • September 5 – Roblox discontinues support for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
  • September 15 – Roblox releases the first Game Template, which is a CTF.
  • September 17 – Game Passes are created.
  • September 18 – TIME names ROBLOX one of the 50 best sites of 2012.
  • September 22 - Roblox Trading System was unavailable.

October 2012[]

  • October 8 – Players can now allow and sell specific gear on their game page.
  • October 19 – Roblox for iPad is first announced. Also, the starter place was changed from the Happy Home to a light grey baseplate. The first user to start with this place was titanic15474. It was changed once again a few months later. It is still available as a place template, except the baseplate is darker and is thicker.
  • October 23 – Three game templates are introduced: Control Points, Free for All, and Team Deathmatch.

November 2012[]

  • November 14
    • On this day, 100,000 users played Roblox at the same time.⁠[citation needed]
    • Roblox released major HUD changes, including Lua side chat and a new backpack design. The new chat was criticized due to long messages cutting mid sentence. The backpack receives a major revamp, with almost everything made an image, and the backpack button and menu moved and joined on top of the backpack.
    • Players earning badges is no longer announced in-game via a message in chat, either removed or broken by the new chat UI.
    • Roblox for iPad is released, and games were made playable on mobile devices.
  • November 29 – Giftsplosion 2012 begins, starting with the Roblox Newshound Gift. A rumor spread that the Newshound Gift was earned by posting "Newspaper" on the forums, which resulted in the forums being spammed by players and administrators posting a forum announcement saying that the gift was not earned that way.
