A username or player name (formerly referred to as character name) is a unique string of characters which can be used to identify a user on Roblox. Players can select any available username of their choice upon creating an account and can later change it for 1,000 Robux.[1] Usernames may have 3 to 20 characters, consisting of numbers, letters, and up to one underscore.

History[]

During the early stages of Roblox, usernames could have spaces in them, such as John Doe and Jane Doe, but this feature was later removed on December 21, 2006, due to users impersonating other users by using spaces, and using their full names to create their username. During this time a few administrator accounts had periods in the username, this feature was likely only included during Roblox's beta period between 2004 and 2006.

In the early 2010s, if a username you wanted was taken, Roblox would add a randomly generated word to the first half of it (as a suggestion for the user) to make it untaken on the sign-up page. This feature was removed sometime after February 2017.

In early 2011 there was no character limit for usernames on IOS, usernames could be 21-50 characters long, the max amount of characters on Roblox is currently 20. This glitch was patched on August 16, 2011.

On February 24, 2016, underscores were added back into the allowed list of characters in usernames (the first time since they were initially removed back in December 2006) (the first user with an underscore in their name during this might've been roblox_tone).

On December 6, 2016 there was an exploit to obtain "any" username. This exploit worked by manipulating Roblox SignUp API to add a linebreak/newline character into the end of the username, this caused many famous users to be impersonated. This exploit went on for 2 hours and 42 minutes and a total of 4300 invalid names to be created. After this exploit was patched all of the accounts were terminated on December 8, 2016[2]. As of March 2024 there are 6 unbanned linebreak accounts due to glitches and appeals.

In 2018, users were prevented from having usernames made up of only numbers. This was to prevent users from creating usernames of phone numbers and because Roblox was adding a login by phone number feature. Currently, Roblox usernames can consist of 3-20 characters using letters, numbers and a single underscore (_) which must not be the first or last character of the username.

In 2019, a new mobile feature made it so that when you make an account on mobile, you can have the username "Robloxian" consisting with 9 random numbers right after it. This feature was added in early June 2019. This feature was shortly removed. If you have this username in 2024 you are able to get a free name change on the account.

More [ Content Deleted ] usernames

Initially, users were only allowed to change their names due to either a parent's privacy concerns (such as the username being a player's full name) or per request by the moderation team due to the name violating the Roblox Terms of Service. If a user did not provide an alternate name, the username would then be changed to [ Content Deleted NUMBER ] for usernames changed prior to 2014 or ResetUserID for names changed after 2014. When a username is changed, it will often change the color of the name displayed on the in-game chat system.

A feature released on October 22, 2013, allows users to voluntarily change their usernames for a 1,000 Robux fee.[3] This feature was highly requested by the community on the forums ever since Roblox first released. All usernames that are changed must satisfy all username requirements and policies.

Summer 2019 Free Name Change

In the summer of 2019, when signing up on mobile, you could choose to sign up without a username, and your given username would be "Robloxian" followed by 9 random digits (e.g. Robloxian294719629) and you could change your username once for free.[citation needed] This feature was short-lived and removed a few months later.

Replacement[]

5802E8CD-B286-40D2-B4B9-F473674B1C79

This is what an Account Deleted username looks like.

Since fall of 2018, most [ Content Deleted ] names have been replaced with [ Account Deleted (PROFILE ID)]. This has been discovered in October 2018, through a user following several of these names. In 2019, future inappropriate usernames were replaced with "Reset[UserID]". In March 2022, after the filter break incident, inappropriate usernames began to hold the format of "roblox_user_[user id]". Sometimes they also have the format of "UN[ticket id]".

Name sniping[]

Name sniping is an activity people do to find rare or lucky names only earlier people could get. For example, "Player" is an example of a name snipe. Most accounts are made for the purpose of taking the name before somebody else can; these accounts are often left inactive or rarely used. Certain groups also have communities that are dedicated to name sniping, which perpetuates the trend. However, this has caused many name snipe accounts to be terminated, due to users password guessing these accounts especially for selling them or showing off in these groups.

2022-2023 username stealing methods[]

In September 2022, a method was found which involves contacting support and claiming that a username was "inappropriate". They would then reset the username, leaving it available for taking. Many users took advantage of this to steal 3 and 4 character "rare" usernames such as "pig" or "fog", or other rare names. This exploit was later discovered by more users, leading to its patch in December 2022. A similar method was created a month later which involved reporting the past usernames of players, giving a false inappropriate meaning to it. Many rare usernames were made until it got semi-patched in late February 2023 and then fully patched in April. It would still work on very rare occasions.

Username trends[]

Aside from name sniping, people often use username trends to make a unique name for themselves and still take the idea of name sniping or adding initials before a name. A list of popular name trends:

  • (Name)Playz(Game)
  • Xx(Name)xX
  • x(Name)x
  • (Name)HD
  • (Name)Gaming
  • (Name)Gamer
  • (Name)ALT
  • (Name)YT
  • ii(Name)
  • ii(Name)ii
  • Word replaced with letters such as "V", "C", "X", or "Z" (Example: Axsthxtics)
  • UseStarCode_(name)
  • (Name)WasTaken
  • (Double digit number) letter k, (Random word) e.g. 24kglocks
  • (Name)_RBLX
  • (Name)RBLX
  • (Name)RBX
  • (Name)_RBX

For some roleplay games, especially those that revolve around policing, these are also common:

  • (Name)Astria
  • ii(Name)_Law
  • (Name)_Law
  • (City)_Operators
  • (City)_Defenders

Username restrictions[]

December 2016 exploit[]

123432

A fake "ROBLOX" account created using the exploit. The name of this account changed to Reset190990774 before it was terminated.

In December 2016, there was an exploit that allowed new accounts to be created with the name of another, such as by making the accounts "David " and "David". People also used this to make 2 letter accounts, such as "pi " and "hi ". This was patched days after the exploit was discovered and all users that were made with the exploit were deleted. However a few stay up for unknown reasons.

March 2022 filter incident[]

On March 24, 2022, the username filter for the sign-up page was temporarily disabled. This meant that usernames could contain phrases that wouldn't normally be accepted by the filter.

Users quickly grasped onto the situation and many accounts containing profanity and slurs were created.

Shortly after the discovery, sign-ups were temporarily disabled and all accounts involved had their names reset to 'roblox_user_USERID' before being terminated.

Quotes[]

These quotes are used when the username a user enters in the sign up page is not available.

  • "This username is already in use." (Typing a username that was already used)
  • "Please enter a username." (Having the username box empty)
  • "Username not appropriate for Roblox." (Typing an inappropriate username)
  • "Username might contain private information." (Typing a username that may contain private information)
  • "Usernames may only contain letters, numbers, and _." (Typing characters that are not those)
  • "Usernames cannot start or end with _." (Starting or ending a username with "_")
  • "Usernames can be 3 to 20 characters long." (Having over 20 characters in your username)
  • "Usernames can have at most one _." (Typing more than 1 "_" in a username)
  • "Username not available, please try again."
  • "*This username is already taken! Try (NAME) instead!" (Old message when typing a username that was already used)

Usernames with 21+ characters[]

50username

Username Example

An Xbox tester profile with 21+ characters

In Roblox, it is possible to have usernames with 21 or more letters using glitches. These usernames mostly occur in Xbox-related profiles or profiles made for testing purposes by Roblox.

The most notable instance of this being possible was in 2011. When Roblox had first released on iOS devices they messed up the character cap. While it is unknown exactly how it was bugged it allowed users to register accounts with up to 50 characters instead of 20. The exploit was eventually leaked on the forums after around a month where it was then patched.

Reset Usernames for Official Roblox Events[]

Initially started around 2018, Roblox started completely resetting and even banning the accounts of old usernames, then proceeding to give the new username in question to accounts made by the Roblox Admin team for their Roblox events, by resetting the original username to Reset (or UN as of 2023) and the Roblox Support Ticket number used to contact Roblox Support. This started getting more apparent in 2022 with more and more brands joining Roblox. After the resets were conducted, they change the original username of the placeholder account that they used then claiming that they made the account when they very clearly did not. They do this with absolutely zero warning to the original owners of those accounts.

  • Every event account has a "placeholder" or "temp" account that is used before it gets reset.
  • There are currently over 100 official accounts that got reset and made for these events.
  • Roblox has used multiple ways to reset these specific accounts, which includes:

(all outdated)

  • Reset(TICKET NUMBER)
  • Reset(TICKET NUMBER)_(number)
  • Reset_(TICKET NUMBER)
  • Reset_(number)Reset(number)
  • Reset_(number)Reset
  • Reset(number)_Reset
  • Currently: UN(TICKET NUMBER)
  • UN(TICKET NUMBER)_(number)
  • UN(TICKET NUMBER)(number)

Reset471 55 (thechainsmokers) ban note

A really rare ban note that only occurs when you create a Roblox Event username before Roblox does. Only two users in Roblox history have this ban note. This is Reset471_55's ban note.

Real name method[]

You used to be able to get invalid usernames such as "blob-man" or "JJ" by having a real name in your username, then contacting Roblox Support to get a new username. They would then change it to whatever you requested, sometimes overlooking the username restrictions. This got patched in late 2019 after people realized this and started abusing it. Sometimes mods would accidentally add a space to the end of the username, or more rarely, to the start of the username.

Trivia[]

This section is a trivia section. Please relocate any relevant information into other sections of the article.

  • Many 3 and 4 character accounts were made in late 2022 and early 2023 after a loophole was found in the way reporting accounts with the Support Form works.
  • Contrary to popular belief, 51 character usernames do not exist. The most characters ever possible were 50.
  • 3 character usernames ran out on June 30, 2015, before underscores were allowed in a username, with 8iw being the last 3 character username to be taken before underscores became allowed. All underscore accounts got taken on February 24, 2016, the day underscores were allowed. The last 3 character username with an underscore is 6_L (terminated), making it the last non-reset 3 character username.
    • The username "KFC" was changed to "Reset23323929", making the username open. A user created the account on October 14, 2020, before getting deleted on February 14, 2023, and getting its username removed once more. This is the current kfc account.
      • Roblox admins reset certain 3 character usernames for certain Roblox events, such as KSI, NFL, BFC, and most recently, PLL.
      • All 4 character usernames were taken sometime in April 2020. There have been a few that have been made afterwards, either due to a change in the Roblox filter or Roblox resetting usernames and making them available again.
      • The last 5 character username with only letters was taken on July 17, 2023, with "wclxb" being the last 5 letter name and "wqjbt" being the second to last available name and the last to be given to a new account. Five character usernames after 7/17/2023 must now have numbers and/or underscores, unless an existing one gets reset, or a filter change takes place.
  • If a username only contains letters, the username must now be 6-20 characters long as of 7/17/2023, and for usernames with numbers and underscores, you can use 5-20 characters.
  • There are users on Roblox who will purposefully change their username to one format (see Username Trends above) in order to be recognizable.
  • If you are logged in to Roblox on multiple devices, changing username will sign you out of all devices except the one where you changed your username.
  • Roblox would add a randomly generated word to the first half of it (as a suggestion for the user) to make it untaken on the sign-up page. This feature was removed sometime after February 2017. This feature was recently brought back in 2023, except it adds numbers to your suggestion of username.
